設立趣意書

経済的・物質的に恵まれすぎる位豊かな現在の社会では、ややもすると精神的な面がなおざりにされ、人間としての尊厳が失なわれつつありますが、こうした時世にこそ私達は心の豊かさを培う必要があるのではないかと思います。

私は美しいものにふれ、美しいものを追求することも、精神の糧をはぐくみ豊かな心をつくる一つの方法ではないかと思っています。美術を鑑賞し愛好し、さらに研究することは私達の生活に潤いを与え、文化を高める力ともなりましょう。

私自身も若い頃、岡田三郎助先生に師事して絵の道に親しみ、後年とくにイタリア中世の美術に関心をもって、イタリア中世の画家たちの絵や画伝を紹介し、また幾多の美術に関する図書も監修、編集して出版してきました。

そこでこのたび、多くの人達が美術を鑑賞し、研究することによって、この分野の水準を高めるため、絵画を中心とした美術の振興を目的とする財団の設立を計画いたしました。

鹿島美術財団は、美術に関する調査研究、特殊な美術図書の刊行、特殊な製作品の作成並びに美術に関する国際的交流などに資金的な援助の事業を行って美術の振興をはかり、わが国の文化の向上と発展に寄与することを目的とするものであります。

この財団の設立によりまして、わが国は勿論のこと、海外の美術家、美術評論家、美術研究家の研究にも何らかの貢献ができ、ひいては美術鑑賞に親しむ人達に便宜と機会を提供して、美術を愛する人が一人でも多くなることに多少なりとも役立つことが出来ればこの上ない幸いであります。

ON ESTABLISHING
THE KAJIMA FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS

Our society is materially affluent-perhaps too affluent. The spiritual facets of life are inclined to be neglected and human dignity to suffer as a result. Perhaps our greatest need today is for spiritual nourishment.

One of the ways we can nourish and enrich our souls is, I believe, frequent contact with objects of beauty. The study, love and appreciation of art enhance our lives and acts as a driving force in developing a nation's culture.

In my youth, I studied painting under Saburosuke Okada. Later, I developed an interest in Italian medieval art, introducing and explaining works of the schools of this period to the people of Japan. I have also supervised and edited many publicationson art.

Now I am establishing a foundation to promote the fine arts, especially painting, and to help raise the standard of art in Japan by enabling more people to study and appreciate it.

The Kajima Foundation for the Arts will promote art by providing financial assistance for research, publication of books of special merit, creation of works of special merit, and international exchange. In so doing, the Foundation seeks to contribute to Japan's cultural development and advancement.

It will be most gratifying if the Foundation is able to assist the work of artists, critics, and scholars in Japan and abroad and, by facilitating greater public access to art, help increase the number of art lovers everywhere.
